Music at St. Mary’s

Started in 1993 by parish organist Marguerite Miller as a chorus of women’s voices, the St. Mary’s Adult Choir has grown over the years to include male singers and choristers ranging in age from high school to senior adults. Under the current direction of Ryan Tibbetts, the St. Mary’s Choir comprises over 30 volunteer and paid singers upholding a tradition of anthems and service music in the Anglican style. We prepare a wide variety of music for the 11 a.m. worship services each week, from Byrd to Bach to Bairstow and beyond. Highlights of the fall choir season include the Advent Service of Lessons and Carols, following the traditions set by the King’s College Choir in Cambridge, England, and A Choral Eucharist on All Saints’ Sunday.

St. Mary’s Choir looking for new singers

The St. Mary’s Choir is open to new volunteer singers! The Choir rehearses on Thursday evenings from 7:30-9:30 p.m. and on Sunday mornings at 10 a.m., and sings at the Sunday 11 a.m. service from September through late May or early June, as well as, at the Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, and Holy Week services. Repertoire varies in range from the Renaissance to recently composed works. The Choir also offers several services of Choral Evensong throughout the year, as well as the Advent Festival of Lessons and Carols in December. Interested singers should ideally have some previous musical experience, whether choral or instrumental, as the choir maintains a brisk rehearsal pace. For more information or or to schedule a brief interview and audition, contact Ryan Tibbetts at (804) 784-5678 or at rtibbetts@stmarysgoochland.org.
