The Acolyte Guild invites girls and boys in middle and upper school to serve in St. Mary’s services of worship. Acolytes assist the rector and other clergy in a variety of important ways. First, they act as crucifer, leading the worship procession as the one who carries the cross. Next, they receive the offering from the people and present the gifts at the altar. In addition, during the service of Holy Communion, acolytes help the clergy set up and clear the holy table. These ministries are essential to the conduct of worship in our church. Acolytes wear vestments during the services. These special articles of clothing include a red cassock (a robe that buttons from neck to ankles) and a white cotta (a vestment worn over the cassock). Vestments indicate the acolyte has an official role in the worship service. Training for acolytes is provided by Minister to Youth Kim Glenn. Mrs. Glenn regularly announces training sessions by email, as well as through this website and the Newsletter. Questions about service as an acolyte should be directed either to Mrs. Glenn or to Rector John Miller. |
